Public switched telephone network

The public switched telephone network is a fancy way of saying that the phones you use to call your friends, family, and classmates are all connected together. Think of it like a big web of wires and computers that talk to each other to help us make phone calls.

When you pick up your phone and dial a number, your phone connects to a special computer called a switch. This switch looks at the number you dialed and figures out where your call needs to go.

The switch then sends your call along a bunch of wires until it reaches the place you want to call. When the person on the other end picks up their phone, they can talk to you just like you were in the same room.

The public switched telephone network is very important because it helps us stay connected with people who are far away from us. It's kind of like a superhighway for our voices, and it allows us to talk to people all around the world.
