ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pure play

Okay kiddo, have you ever played a game where you had to use only one kind of toy to win? Like, maybe you only had to use a ball and nothing else? Well, that's kind of like what pure play means in business.

Pure play companies are businesses that focus on doing only one thing. Just like how you only used one kind of toy to win the game, pure play companies only focus on selling one type of product or doing one type of service. For example, a pure play company could focus only on selling video games or making only phone cases.

Being a pure play company is kind of like being really good at playing with that one toy in the game. The company gets really good at making that one product or doing that one service really well. But, just like in the game, if the company doesn't do well with that one thing, it could lose the whole game and not make any money.

So, while being a pure play company can be really good for being the best at one thing, it can also be risky if people stop liking or needing that one thing. Just like how you might get bored of playing with the same toy all the time.
