Qere and Ketiv

Okay kiddo, let's talk about qere and ketiv.

In the Hebrew language, there are certain words that have different spellings in the written text and how they are actually pronounced. These are called qere and ketiv.

The ketiv is the way the word is written down, and the qere is how it is supposed to be pronounced. Sometimes, there may be a difference between the two because of different dialects or variations in pronunciation over time.

So, when someone is reading the Hebrew text and they come across one of these words, they may see one thing written, but actually say something else out loud.

It's kind of like when we play the game telephone, where one person whispers a message in someone's ear, and by the time it gets to the end, the message may have changed slightly.

So, qere and ketiv are just ways to make sure we understand the correct pronunciation of certain Hebrew words, even if they are spelled a little differently.
