Qu Yuan

Qu Yuan is a person who lived a very long time ago in China, almost 2,300 years ago! He was a very smart man and a great poet and he wanted to help the people of his country.

One day, Qu Yuan saw that the government was not doing a good job and the people were not happy. He wanted to help his country, but the government didn't listen to him. So, Qu Yuan decided to write poems to tell the people what he thought was important and what could be done to make things better.

Even though Qu Yuan tried to help, things didn't get better and eventually, he was very sad. He didn't want to live anymore and jumped into a river. People tried to save him, but they couldn't find him. So, every year, on the fifth day of the fifth month, people in China hold a festival to remember Qu Yuan and all the good things he did.

They throw rice dumplings into the river because people tried to keep the fish from eating Qu Yuan's body by throwing food in the water. And they have dragon boat races because the people who tried to save Qu Yuan were in boats that had dragon heads on them! This is called the Dragon Boat Festival and it helps people remember how important Qu Yuan was and how much he wanted to help his country.
