Quirt

Quirt is like a special tool that cowboys use to control their horses. It looks like a stick with a long strap attached to it. The stick part is usually made of wood or leather and is about the size of your arm. The strap part is made of leather or other strong material and is long enough to reach the horse without the cowboy having to get too close.

When the cowboy wants to make the horse go in a certain direction or go faster, he can use the quirt to gently tap the horse on its backside. This tapping is called "spurring" the horse. It doesn't hurt the horse, but it lets the horse know that the cowboy wants it to do something.

The quirt is a very important tool for cowboys because it helps them communicate with their horses without having to use lots of words. They can use the quirt to tell the horse to turn left or right, speed up or slow down, or even stop completely.

So, in summary, the quirt is a tool that cowboys use to communicate with their horses by tapping them on the backside to tell them what to do.
