ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rachis

The rachis is like the backbone of a leaf. Just like you have a backbone that helps keep you upright and allows you to move, the rachis helps keep the leaf in place and allows it to move with the wind. The rachis is a long, thin piece that connects all of the smaller parts of the leaf together. When you look at a leaf, you can see that it has smaller parts called leaflets and these are connected to the rachis. So, the rachis is like the big brother or sister that keeps all of the little parts of the leaf working together to make the whole thing work properly.
