Okay kiddo, do you know what a computer is? It's a machine that can do a lot of different things, like help you play games or find information on the internet. But, did you know that there are also programs or software that can talk to you like a real person?
"Racter" is one of those programs or software that was made in the 1980s, before you were even born. It was designed to emulate human conversations with anyone who used it. Racter is a chatbot, which means it can chat with people or other computer programs.
But, Racter is different from other chatbots because it wasn't made to give useful information like the weather, news or directions. It was made to talk about anything, like philosophy or gossip, and even create stories and poems. Racter uses artificial intelligence, which means it tries to learn and understand language like a human would.
People back then were amazed by Racter because it was one of the first programs that could act like a real person, but they also found it funny and weird because Racter's responses were often nonsensical or strange. Some even thought Racter was a little bit crazy because it would say strange things like "I want to be a vacuum cleaner."
Nowadays, there are lots of other chatbots and virtual assistants that are even better at understanding and responding to us, but Racter was one of the first to show us what was possible. And that's what Racter is all about, a program that showed us how computers and humans can communicate and interact in new and exciting ways.
