ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Radio telescope

Imagine you have a big ear that can hear sounds that are very far away. That's what a radio telescope is like, but instead of hearing sounds, it hears radio waves that come from space.

Radio waves are a type of energy that can travel through space just like light does. But our eyes can't see radio waves because they are invisible to us. Radio telescopes are like big antennas that can pick up these radio waves and turn them into signals that scientists can study.

Radio telescopes are often really big and have a dish shape, like a giant bowl or even a satellite dish that you might see on someone's house. The dish collects radio waves and bounces them onto a receiver that is like a super-sensitive microphone.

Scientists use radio telescopes to study things in space like stars, galaxies, and even planets. They can learn a lot about how these objects work and what they are made of by listening to the radio waves they send out.

So in short, a radio telescope is like a giant ear that can hear radio waves from space and help scientists learn more about the universe.
