ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Radiolyse

Radiolyse is when tiny particles, called radiation, interact with molecules in the air or other substances. This interaction can cause the molecules to break apart into smaller pieces, which can be harmful or useful depending on the situation. Imagine you have a toy tower made of blocks, but a big ball comes flying in and knocks some of the blocks down. That's kind of like what happens with radiolyse, only with much smaller things that we cannot see. Sometimes this can happen in our bodies if we are exposed to too much radiation, so it's important to be careful and protect ourselves from radiation exposure. Scientists can also use radiolyse to study different molecules and their behavior, which can help us learn more about the world around us.
