Raking light

Have you ever noticed how the sunlight looks different on your toys or your table when it's close to the ground and shining from the side? That's kind of like what raking light is!

Raking light is when light shines sideways across something, like a painting or a sculpture. It's kind of like shining a flashlight on something, but from the side instead of straight on.

When light shines like this, it can create shadows and make things look different. For example, if you shine raking light on your face, your nose might look bigger because the shadows make it stand out more.

Artists and scientists use raking light to study things more closely. They can see details they might not have noticed before because the shadows and light make things stand out in a new way.

So next time you see sunlight shining sideways across something, you can think of it as raking light and how it can help us see things in a different way!
