Recurring Saturday Night Live characters and sketches

You know how sometimes you see the same people doing the same funny things on Saturday Night Live (SNL)? That’s because they are playing a character, which means they pretend to be someone else who is not them. They do this over and over again in different episodes of the show.

For example, one of the most famous characters on SNL is called “Stefon.” Stefon is a guy who works as a city guide and is always telling people about weird places to go out and have fun in New York City. He talks really fast and has a lot of strange, funny ideas.

Another character you might have seen is “Mary Katherine Gallagher.” She’s a high school student who is very clumsy and awkward. She likes to do a dance called “Superstar!” but she messes it up a lot and falls down.

Sketches are like mini-plays or scenes that the actors perform in. The SNL writers come up with different sketch ideas every week for the actors to perform. Sometimes the sketches are about real things happening in the world, like politics or people’s behavior. Other times they are just silly and don’t really have a point.

Sometimes the sketches and the characters become really popular, and people start talking about them all the time. So the show keeps doing them over and over again, because people like to see them.

That’s pretty much it! The actors pretend to be other people and do funny things, and the sketches are the little shows they perform in. Some of the characters and sketches become really famous and become a regular part of the show.
