ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Red pill and blue pill

The Red Pill and the Blue Pill are two popular symbols or metaphors used in stories and debates on topics like society, politics, and culture. The Red Pill represents knowledge and freedom to make choices, while the Blue Pill represents security and comfort but less freedom.

The most well-known comparison is from the movie, The Matrix. In it, the main character (Neo) is given the choice between taking a Red Pill or a Blue Pill. The Red Pill will make him wake up from a virtual world and gain knowledge of the outside world, while the Blue Pill will keep him in the virtual world and not have to face the reality of what is truly happening. Neo chooses the Red Pill and discovers a far more dangerous and complex real world that he must confront and battle in order to save himself.

The Red Pill and Blue Pill can also be used to represent different stances or choices on certain matters in life. Taking the Red Pill could mean that you choose to see the truth of a matter or situation, no matter how painful or difficult it may be. Taking the Blue Pill could mean that you choose to ignore or not see the truth and remain comfortable in your current state of denial.
