ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reference (computer science)

Reference in computer science is a way of referring to something without actually giving the whole thing. It could be a pointer to the location where something is stored, or even a description of something. It’s like having a short-cut – instead of carrying an entire file, you just have a little note about it. This makes it easier for computers to access what it needs and is part of what makes them so powerful.
