ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Refused ballot

Have you ever played a game where you have to choose between two things, but you don't really like either of them? When you don't want to choose one of them, you might say "I refuse to choose."

In the grown-up world, we have something similar called a refused ballot. This happens when you go to vote - which means choosing who you want to be in charge of making important decisions for your community - but you don't like any of the choices.

If you want to refuse to vote for any of the people or issues on the ballot, you can turn in a blank or spoiled ballot. A blank ballot means you didn't mark anything on it, and a spoiled ballot means you marked it wrong on purpose. When someone does this, we count it as a "refused ballot" because they are refusing to choose.

It's important to remember that while it's okay to refuse to choose, it's also important to stay informed and engaged in making decisions for your community. So when you grow up, make sure to carefully consider your choices and vote for someone or something that you believe will make your community a better place.
