ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Regulation of electronic cigarettes

Okay kiddo, let me explain. Electronic cigarettes or “e-cigarettes” are devices that people use to inhale a mixture of water, chemicals and flavorings. They are also called “vapes”. Now, since these vapes are relatively new, the government is trying to figure out the best way to make sure they are safe for people to use. They do this through something called “regulation”. That means they set rules and guidelines for how vapes are made and sold.

The government has a group of people called the “Food and Drug Administration” or “FDA” for short. They are in charge of making sure that things you eat and use don’t harm you. They want to make sure vapes don’t make people sick or hurt them in any way.

So, the FDA has created some rules that the makers of vapes need to follow. They have made it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy or use vapes. They also require the makers to list all the ingredients used in the liquid that fills the vape, and they have to tell people how much nicotine is in it. Nicotine is a drug that is found in some vapes and it can be harmful, especially to kids.

The FDA also wants the makers of vapes to follow certain safety standards. They want the makers to guarantee that their products are safe to use, and they want to know if the makers have made changes to the product that could cause harm to people. This is important so that people who use vapes can trust that they are not going to get sick from using them.

So that's how it works, kiddo. The government makes rules to make sure vapes are safe, and they have a group called the FDA that makes sure the rules are being followed.
