ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rehabilitation Act of 1973

Okay kiddo, so imagine you and your friends are playing a game outside. You have a lot of fun, but suddenly you trip and hurt your ankle. Now you can't play the game as well as you'd like because of the injury. That's kind of like what happened to some people who had disabilities a long time ago.

Some people who had disabilities weren't treated fairly. They didn't have the same opportunities as other people, like being able to go to school or get a job. This wasn't very nice, so the government decided to make a law to help them.

This law is called the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. "Rehabilitation" means to help someone get better or stronger. The law made sure that people with disabilities could get the help they needed to do things that other people could do.

The law said that schools, employers, and other places had to make changes to help people with disabilities. For example, schools had to make sure that kids with disabilities could go to school and learn. Employers had to make sure that people with disabilities could work and earn money too. These changes, called accommodations, made it so people with disabilities could have the same opportunities as everyone else.

Overall, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 helped make sure that people with disabilities were treated more fairly and had more chances to do things they wanted to do.
