ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Relative root system

Okay kiddo, a plant's root system is like its feet. They help it stay grounded in the soil and absorb water and nutrients. The relative root system is how we compare different plants' root systems.

It's like if you and your friend both have feet, but your feet are bigger and stronger than your friend's. We would say that your relative foot size is larger than your friend's.

So, if we compare two plants and see that one has roots that go deeper and wider in the soil, we would say that it has a larger relative root system than the other plant.

Basically, the relative root system is just a way to understand how different plants absorb nutrients and water from the soil. It helps us understand how plants grow and helps us choose which plants to grow in different environments.
