ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Representative democracy

Representative democracy is a type of government where people come together to choose (or elect) people to represent their interests in a governing body. The people elected by their fellow citizens to make decisions on behalf of the group are called representatives. The representatives make laws and other decisions that affect the people they are representing. This type of government is different from direct democracy because in direct democracy, citizens make decisions directly, without using representatives.
