ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Request for Comments

Okay kiddo, so when people want to make something new or change something that already exists, they like to get other people's opinions before they go ahead and do it. That's where request for comments (RFC) comes in.

An RFC is basically a way for people to share their ideas and get feedback from others. It's like showing a drawing you made to your friends and asking what they think of it.

But instead of a drawing, it's usually a proposal for a new idea or a change to an existing idea. And instead of your friends, it's a bunch of experts in the field who can give their opinions and make sure everything is going to work as it should.

Once enough people have given their opinion and the idea is tweaked and refined, it is usually ready to be put into action. So, an RFC is really just a way to make sure that the thing being created or changed is the best it can be.
