Resistance (psychoanalysis)

Resistance in psychoanalysis is when you are scared to talk about something or you don't want to talk about it. It's like when you don't want to eat vegetables because you think they are gross, but your mom says they are good for you. You don't want to do it, but you know you should.

In therapy, the therapist might ask you questions about your life, your feelings, or your thoughts, and sometimes it can be hard to answer them. You might feel embarrassed, scared or sad. This is called resistance.

The therapist helps you understand why you are resisting by asking questions and trying to understand your feelings. If you don't talk about something that's bothering you, it can be hard to get better. So the therapist wants to help you talk about it, even if it's hard.

Just like eating vegetables can be good for your body, talking about difficult things can be good for your mind. Over time, you might feel better, like when you start to like vegetables after eating them enough times. It's okay to be scared to talk about difficult things, but the therapist is there to help you through it.
