ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Resource nationalism

Resource nationalism is when a country wants to control its own natural resources like oil, gas, minerals or even the trees in its forests. It means that the country wants to make sure that these resources are used to help the people who live there and not just to make money for other countries.

It's like when you have a toy that your friend wants to play with, but you don't want to share it because it's yours. You want to keep it all for yourself. That's what some countries feel about their natural resources. They don't want other countries to take advantage of them and want to make sure they use them in a way that is beneficial for their own people.

But sometimes, it can cause disagreements between countries because the natural resources are limited, and everyone wants a piece of them. It's like if you and your friend both want the same toy, but there's only one of them. You both may get upset because you can't both have it.

Resource nationalism can also mean that the country may put restrictions on other countries that want to do business with them or else they may need to pay higher taxes for using the natural resources. Just like if your friend wants to play with your toy, you may ask them to give you something in return, like a treat or another toy to play with.

Overall, resource nationalism is a way for a country to protect their natural resources and make sure they use them in a way that helps their own people.
