ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Responsibility to protect

Responsibility to protect (or 'R2P') is a way that countries, like the United States, can try to keep people safe from bad things like wars, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other kinds of violence. They do this by working with other countries, like the UN, to help them stop any kind of violence, and by punishing people who cause violence or hurt people. It is a way to hold people responsible for their actions and make sure that bad things don't happen again.
