Rhabdomyolysis

Rhabdomyolysis is a big, long word that happens when the muscles in your body get really hurt and start to break down.

Just like when you play too much, sometimes your muscles can get really sore and tired. But instead of just feeling tired, sometimes they can start to get really, really hurt.

When the muscles get hurt like this, they can start to break down and release a bunch of tiny pieces into your body. These tiny pieces are called “myoglobin”, and they can be bad for you because they can clog up your kidneys and make it hard for them to work.

So when people get rhabdomyolysis, they have to go to the doctor and get special treatment to help their kidneys work better and to stop more muscle from getting hurt.

Pretty scary stuff, but it’s always better to tell a grown-up if your muscles start to feel overly sore and tired!
