Rickettsiales

Rickettsiales are a group of very tiny creatures that belong to the family of bacteria. They are so tiny that you cannot see them with your eyes because they are smaller than the tiniest grain of sand. These creatures cause many diseases in animals and humans.

Just like you and I eat food to stay healthy and strong, these tiny creatures also need to eat to survive. Their favorite food is the cells inside our bodies, the cells that make up our organs and tissues. Rickettsiales enter our bodies through the bites of insects like ticks and fleas.

Once inside our bodies, Rickettsiales hide inside our cells and begin to eat them. This causes a lot of damage to our organs and tissues, making us very sick. Some of the diseases caused by Rickettsiales include Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Murine Typhus and Q fever.

Luckily, doctors have ways of treating these diseases with antibiotics. They also recommend that we protect ourselves from insect bites by wearing protective clothing, using insect repellent and staying away from areas with lots of ticks and fleas.
