ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ring wing

Okay kiddo, do you see birds flying in the sky with their wings spread out? Well, airplanes have wings too, but they look a little bit different.

You see, there are two types of wings that airplanes can have: regular wings and ring wings. The regular wings are like the ones you see on birds, they are straight and go from the front to the back of the airplane. But ring wings are different.

Imagine taking a regular wing and bending it so that the two ends meet together, like a circle. That's what a ring wing looks like! And instead of being on the top of the airplane, it's on the bottom.

Now, why would somebody want to put a ring wing on an airplane? Well, it has to do with the way that the airplane flies. You see, when an airplane flies with regular wings, the air goes over the top of the wing and makes it lift up. But with a ring wing, the air goes through the middle of the circle and out the bottom, making the airplane more stable and easier to control.

Ring wings aren't used very often, but they are still really cool to think about!
