ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Roi fainéant

Okay, so imagine you have a special job where you are in charge of a really big castle. You have to make sure everything is running smoothly and the castle is protected. But let's say you don't really like doing your job and you don't really do much to take care of the castle. You just sort of sit around and let other people do all the work.

This is a bit like what a roi fainéant is. In French, roi means "king" and fainéant means "lazy" or "do-nothing." So a roi fainéant is a lazy or do-nothing king.

In history, there were some kings who were technically in charge of their kingdom, but they didn't really do much to govern. They would just let other people make decisions for them and sort of went along with whatever happened. They weren't necessarily bad rulers, but they weren't really doing the job they were supposed to do either.

So a roi fainéant is basically a lazy king who doesn't take charge and lets other people do all the work.
