ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Roman Law

Roman law was the law that the people in Rome followed hundreds of years ago. It was very strict and demanded obedience, but it also gave individuals rights and protected them from abuse. Roman law also gave people rights to own land, start businesses, and go to court. Roman law also gave people rights in marriage and family life, so that both men and women were treated equally. This means that even though men and women were treated differently in other parts of the world, in Rome they were treated the same. Roman law was the basis for many of the laws we have today and was an important part of history.
