ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Romanization of Hispania

Ok kiddo, you know how some people speak different languages, right? Well, a long, long time ago, people in a place called Hispania (which is now Spain) spoke a language called Latin. But Latin is kind of hard to read and write, and lots of people didn't know how to speak it very well. So, the Romans came along and decided to make things easier.

What they did was they invented a new system of writing Latin called romanization. They took the Latin alphabet (which is kind of like our ABCs), and added some extra letters and symbols so that they could write down Latin words in a way that was easier to understand. They also made some changes to the way the language was spoken so that it sounded more like the way they spoke in Rome.

This new system of writing and speaking Latin made life a lot easier for the people of Hispania. They could read and write more easily, and they could also talk to other people in the Roman empire who spoke Latin. It also made it easier for the Romans to control Hispania, because they could communicate more effectively with the people there.

So basically, romanization of Hispania was a way for the Romans to make communication easier between themselves and the people of Hispania, by inventing a new way of writing and speaking Latin that was easier to understand.
