ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Root system

Okay kiddo, so you know how plants have a part called roots that they use to drink water and get nutrients from the soil? Well, that whole thing is called the root system!

It's kind of like how you have a body with different parts, like arms and legs and a belly. But instead of body parts, the root system has different types of roots that do different jobs.

There are big, thick roots called taproots that go straight down into the soil like a straw. They're really good at finding water deep underground, kind of like how you drink a milkshake with a straw.

Then there are smaller, hair-like roots called fibrous roots that spread out all over the place. They're really good at finding nutrients in the soil, kind of like how you find all the good pieces in a cereal box.

Just like how you have to keep your body healthy, plants have to keep their root system healthy too! They need sunlight, water, and nutrients from the soil to grow big and strong. And without a good root system, the plant wouldn't be able to survive.

I hope that helps, little buddy!
