ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rote learning

Rote learning is when you memorize something by repeating it over and over again until it stays in your brain, just like how you practice your ABCs or count numbers. When you do rote learning, you don't really understand what you're memorizing, you're just trying to remember it word for word. It's like when you learn a song by listening to it a lot and singing it along without completely understanding what the words mean. Rote learning is useful when you need to memorize something quickly like a phone number, but it's not the best way to learn because it doesn't help you understand the meaning behind what you're memorizing.
