Rumspringa is a special time period in the lives of some young Amish people. The Amish are a religious group that lives in certain parts of the United States and Canada. They have a very different way of life than most people, and they choose to live without many modern technologies and conveniences.
When young Amish people reach the age of 16, they are allowed to take part in rumspringa. This means that they are able to experience life outside of the Amish community and follow some of the ways of the "English" (people who are not Amish).
During rumspringa, these young people are allowed to dress differently, engage in activities like driving cars, watching television, and using phones, and even date people outside the Amish community.
While this may all sound very exciting, the reason for rumspringa is to give young people a chance to experience life outside the Amish community and decide if they want to stay in the Amish way of life or join the "English" world permanently.
After rumspringa is over, the young people must make a decision. If they choose to stay in the Amish community, they must give up the modern ways they were able to experience during rumspringa. If they choose to join the "English" world, they will be shunned by the community and may never be allowed to return.
