ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

S-units

S-units are a way to measure the strength of radio signals that go through the air. Just like how when you yell really loud, someone far away might not hear you very well, radio signals can get weaker as they go farther away.

But how can we tell how strong a radio signal is? That's where S-units come in. Imagine you have a big bowl of candies, and you want to know how many candies there are. You could count them all, but that would take a long time. Instead, you could use a bigger bowl and compare it to the smaller bowl. If the bigger bowl can hold 10 times as many candies as the smaller bowl, you know that the smaller bowl has one-tenth (1/10) the number of candies as the bigger bowl.

S-units are kind of like those two bowls. They are two different sizes, and we compare them to each other. The bigger S-unit is called S9, and the smaller S-unit is called S0. If we have a radio signal that's very strong, we say it's at S9, like a bowl that's very full of candies. But if we have a radio signal that's very weak, we say it's at S0, like a bowl with almost no candies in it.

So next time you hear someone talking about S-units, just think of two bowls and how many candies they can hold compared to each other!
