ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

SOPA

Okay, sweetie, let me explain this to you. So, SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) is a law that some people in the government wanted to make. They were worried that some people were copying movies, music, and books from the internet and sharing them with others without paying for them. And they thought that this was very bad because it was stealing and people and companies were losing a lot of money.

So, they wanted to stop this from happening and thought that the best way to do it was to make a law. This law would let the government and companies block websites that were sharing stolen stuff on the internet. They could just say that the website was doing something wrong and make it go away.

But many people thought that this was not a good idea. They thought that the people in the government would have too much power over the internet and could censor whatever they wanted. They also said that this might hurt companies that weren't actually doing anything wrong because some people might just accuse them of sharing stolen things even if they weren't.

In the end, many people protested and made lots of noise about this. And the government decided not to make this law. So, now we can keep sharing things online without worrying someone will come and spy on us or take our favorite websites away.
