ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sacrifice

Sacrifice means giving up something you think is important for something or someone else that you think is even more important.

For example, suppose your parents tell you that they cannot afford to buy you new toys this month because they need to save money for groceries. If you decide not to ask them for new toys this month, you are making a sacrifice. You are giving up something you want (new toys) to help your parents (so they can buy necessary groceries).

Similarly, people make sacrifices for different reasons. Some people may sacrifice their time, energy, or money to help others. Soldiers may sacrifice their lives to protect their country. Athletes may sacrifice their hobbies and leisure time to train hard for a competition.

Sacrifices can be big or small, but they all involve giving something up for something or someone else. Sacrifices are often made to show love and kindness towards others, and to help make the world a better place.
