ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sahti

Sahti is a special kind of beer that comes from Finland. It's made from grain like other beers, but it's also made with something called juniper branches and berries.

Okay, let's break it down. You know how people make bread from grains like wheat or barley? Well, sahti is sort of like a bread-flavored beer. Only instead of using bread to make the flavor, we use the same grains they use to make bread.

But here's where sahti gets extra special. In addition to the grains, they add parts of the juniper tree. Have you seen a Christmas tree before? The kind with the blue-ish green needles? That's what the juniper tree looks like.

Anyway, they take some branches from the juniper tree and mix it in with the grains they're already using. And then they add in juniper berries, which are these small reddish purple things that grow on the juniper tree.

When all of these things are mixed together and brewed (which means they basically cook it in hot water), you get sahti! It can taste a little like bread, with a hint of pine or juniper flavor from the tree pieces.

So remember, sahti is a special kind of beer from Finland that's made with grains, juniper branches, and juniper berries!
