Sandpaper is a special kind of paper that has little tiny rocks stuck to it. These little rocks are called abrasive grains. When you rub the sandpaper on a surface, like wood or metal, the abrasive grains scratch it. This makes the surface smoother or rougher, depending on what you want to do with it.
Different kinds of sandpaper have different sizes of abrasive grains. The bigger the grain, the rougher it will feel when you touch it. The smaller the grain, the smoother it will feel. When you see sandpaper with numbers on it, like 80 grit or 220 grit, that tells you how big the abrasive grains are.
Sandpaper comes in different shapes and sizes, too. Some sandpaper is really big, like a sheet of paper. Some is really small, like the size of your finger. You can use sandpaper by holding it with your hand and rubbing it on a surface. Or you can stick it onto a special tool called a sanding block, which makes it easier to use.
Sandpaper is used for lots of things. You can use it to sand down a rough piece of wood to make it smooth and nice to touch. Or you can use it to remove old paint or rust from metal. Sandpaper is also used in some crafts to create a specific texture or pattern.
