ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Santa Barbara Airlines Flight 518

Okay kiddo, let me explain what happened to Santa Barbara Airlines Flight 518.

One day in 2008, a big airplane with lots of people on it took off from the airport in Venezuela. They were going to fly to a city called Quito in Ecuador.

But something went wrong. When the plane was high up in the air, the pilots started to have trouble seeing where they were going. It was really cloudy and foggy, and they couldn't see anything outside the windows.

They tried to land the plane at the Quito airport, but they missed the runway. That means they didn't land on the part of the airport where planes are supposed to land.

The plane crashed into a hillside near the airport instead. It was very, very sad because everyone on board died.

Experts looked into what happened and they found out that there were a few things that went wrong. The pilots didn't realize how bad the weather was, so they didn't prepare properly. And the airport didn't have good enough safety measures to help prevent accidents like this.

It was a really tragic accident, but people have learned from it and are trying to make airplane travel as safe as possible.
