ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scale of Protective Factors (SPF)

SPF (Scale of Protective Factors) is like a shield that you can wear on your skin to protect it from getting burned by the sun. The higher the number on the SPF scale, the stronger the shield is. SPF comes in different levels, like 15, 30, and 50.

Let's say you are going outside to play in the sun. If you wear SPF 15, it's like having 15 layers of protection on your skin. SPF 30 means you have 30 layers of protection, and SPF 50 means you have 50 layers of protection.

These shields block harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun that can hurt your skin and make it red, painful or cause sunburns. A sunburn can be very bad and make your skin hurt for days. So, it's a good idea to use sunscreen with SPF to protect your skin when spending time outdoors.

Just like a superhero wearing their mask and cape to protect themselves from the sun, SPF lotion can protect you from the harmful effects of the sun. Remember to always apply sunscreen with a high SPF every time you go outside to play, no matter how warm or cool it is outside!
