ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scandinavian colonialism

Okay, so imagine you have a toy box with lots of different toys in it. Some of your friends also have toy boxes. One day, you and your friends decide to take some of your toys and share them with each other. This is called sharing and it's a good thing because everyone gets to play with different kinds of toys.

Now, a long time ago, some people from a place called Scandinavia (which includes countries like Norway, Sweden, and Denmark) decided they wanted to explore and find new things. They also wanted to share their ideas and things with other people in different parts of the world.

So, they made long, dangerous journeys across the sea to places like North America, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. When they got there, they saw that some people had things they didn't have, like gold, spices, and other goods. The Scandinavian people wanted these things, so they started to trade with the people they met.

But sometimes, the Scandinavian people also wanted more than just trading. They wanted to take control of the land and the people who lived there. This is called colonization. It's not always a good thing because sometimes it means that one group of people takes over and doesn't treat the other group very well.

So, the Scandinavian people started to build settlements in different parts of the world. They would bring their own people there to live and work, and sometimes they would force the local people to work for them too.

It's important to remember that not all Scandinavian people were involved in colonization and that it happened a long time ago. But it's still important to learn about it and think about how it affected people in different parts of the world.
