ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Segaki

Segaki is a special ceremony that takes place in some Buddhist traditions during the month of July or August. It is a time when people remember and honor their ancestors who have passed away.

During the ceremony, people make offerings such as food, flowers, and incense to their ancestors. They also chant and pray for their ancestors to find peace and enlightenment in the afterlife.

The word "segaki" means "feeding the hungry ghosts." This comes from the belief that during the ceremony, the spirits of ancestors who have not yet found peace may come back to visit the living. By offering food and prayers, people hope to feed these hungry ghosts and help them find rest.

Segaki is an important part of Buddhist culture in some countries such as Japan and China. It is a way for people to show respect and gratitude to their ancestors, and to connect with their family history and heritage.
