ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Segner wheel

Okay kiddo, so have you ever seen a water wheel? It's a big wheel that turns when water flows over it, right? Well, a Segner Wheel is kind of like a water wheel, but instead of using water, it uses air.

Now, air is all around us and we can’t see it, but it does have little tiny pieces called molecules that we can feel when we move. Just like water flows and turns the water wheel, if we blow air on the Segner Wheel, it will start to spin too!

The Segner Wheel has a kind of curved shape to it, and that’s what makes it special. When we blow air through it, the curved shape causes the air to spin around the wheel, which makes the wheel start to spin as well. Pretty cool, huh?

Scientists use Segner Wheels to study how air moves and how to make things like turbines and fans work better. So, next time you blow a bubble or even blow out a candle, think about how the air is moving and how it could make things spin like a Segner Wheel.
