ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Self-discharger

Alright kiddo, you know when you get a new toy, and it's really cool, and you want to play with it all the time? But over time, you might get tired of it, or you might forget about it and leave it somewhere. That's kind of like what happens with batteries.

Batteries have something called a self-discharger. That means that even when the battery isn't being used, it's slowly losing power all by itself. The longer the battery sits without being used, the more it will lose power. Just like how your toy might lose its appeal over time.

This is why sometimes you might find that even though you haven't used your flashlight in a while, it doesn't work when you go to turn it on. That's because the battery slowly lost its power all by itself, and it wasn't able to store enough energy to make the flashlight work.

So, it's important to remember to use your toys and use up your batteries so they don't lose power too quickly. But, if you do have some batteries that you're not going to use for a while, you can store them in a cool, dry place to help slow down the self-discharge process.
