ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Self-envy

Ok kiddo, have you ever felt sad or unhappy when you saw somebody else has something that you want or wish you had? Like if your friend got a new toy or a shirt that you really liked and you didn't have it? Well, that feeling of sadness and wanting what somebody else has is called envy.

Now, let's talk about self-envy. Have you ever felt sad or unhappy because you don't have something that YOU want for yourself? Maybe you want to be good at playing soccer or drawing, and you feel unhappy because you think you're not as good at it as you want to be. This feeling of sadness and wanting something for yourself is called self-envy.

It's important to remember that it's okay to want things for yourself and to work towards getting them, but when we start to feel really bad about ourselves because we don't have what we want, that's when self-envy can become a problem.

So, what can we do about self-envy? We can try to focus on the things we are good at and the things we have accomplished so far. We can also try to learn new skills or work harder towards our goals. Most importantly, we should always remember that we are unique and special just the way we are, and that nobody else can be us.
