ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Semicomma

Okay, so you know what a comma looks like, right? It's that little squiggly line that helps separate parts of a sentence.

Well, a semicomma is kind of like a comma's cousin. It looks like a regular comma, but it has a little dot above it.

When we use a semicomma in a sentence, it's like we're telling the reader that we're not quite done with what we're saying, but we want to take a little pause before we move on to the next part.

So if we're writing a really long sentence with a lot of different ideas, we might use semicolons to break up those ideas and help the reader understand what we're talking about.

It's kind of like taking a breath in between different parts of a story - when we read out loud, we need to pause sometimes to give our voice a break and help people keep up. Semicolons do the same thing in writing!
