ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sensitivity reader

Okay kiddo, have you ever written a story or read a book that had something in it that made you feel uncomfortable or upset? Well, sometimes that happens to other people too, especially if the story is about a group of people that they belong to, like if the story is about someone who has a different skin color or speaks a different language than them.

That’s where sensitivity readers come in! They’re people who read stories before they are published to make sure that they won’t hurt the feelings of any particular group of people. They might check things like if the characters are using stereotypes that are offensive, or if the way that something is described is mean or hurtful.

It’s important to understand that sensitivity readers don’t make the story less good or interesting. Instead, they help make it better by making sure that everyone can read it without feeling left out or hurt. It’s kind of like making sure that everybody gets to play and have fun on the playground!
