Do you know that feeling you get when your mommy or daddy is about to leave you for a while? You might feel scared or worried that something bad will happen to them or to you once they're gone. That's normal and happens to most kids.
However, some kids feel way more scared and worried than other kids. They get extremely upset and can't seem to calm down when their mommy or daddy leaves. This is called separation anxiety disorder.
Kids with separation anxiety disorder are so scared of being away from their parents or loved ones that they will do anything to avoid being alone. This can make it really hard for them to go to school, attend sleepovers, or even play with friends. They might cry, scream, have nightmares, or throw tantrums when they have to leave their parents' side.
Separation anxiety disorder can be really frustrating for both the kid and their parents. But don't worry, there are ways to help manage it. Therapy can be helpful, where the kid learns how to calm themselves down and cope with the scary feelings. The parents can also work with the therapist to gradually expose the kid to small separations, so they feel more comfortable being away from their loved ones.
Remember, separation anxiety disorder is nothing to be ashamed of. Lots of kids go through it and with a little help, it can get better over time.
