ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Serial presence detect

Serial presence detect (SPD) is like a secret code that your computer's memory sticks have. This code helps your computer know important things about the memory stick, like how much memory it has and how fast it can work.

The SPD works by putting information into tiny electronic chips on the memory stick. These chips are like little secretaries that can hold lots of information. When your computer turns on, it talks to these chips to get the information it needs.

For example, let's say you have two memory sticks in your computer. One has 4 gigabytes of memory and can work at a speed of 2400 megahertz, while the other has 8 gigabytes of memory and can work at a speed of 2133 megahertz. Your computer needs to know these details in order to handle the memory properly.

But if the SPD chips weren't there, your computer wouldn't know anything about the memory sticks. It would be like trying to play a game with the wrong rules! So, thanks to SPD, your computer can use your memory sticks correctly and efficiently.
