ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Serjeant-at-law

Imagine there is a special kind of lawyer who is very good at their job. They are called serjeants-at-law.

Being a serjeant-at-law is like being a superhero lawyer because they have superpowers in the law world. They are so good at their job that they are recognized as experts and get special treatment.

To become a serjeant-at-law, a regular lawyer has to work really hard and pass a special test. This test is very difficult and only a few lawyers can pass it. Once they pass the test, they are given a special ring to wear that shows they are a serjeant-at-law.

In the olden days, serjeants-at-law wore special clothing and wigs to show they were important. They would also have a special place in court to sit because they were top-level lawyers.

Although serjeants-at-law are no longer around today, they were important in history and helped make the legal system strong. So if you ever hear about a serjeant-at-law, just remember that they were like the Superman or Wonder Woman of the legal world.
