ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Settlement conference

A settlement conference is kind of like a meeting where grown-ups try to talk and figure out a problem without fighting or going to court. It's a special time when everyone involved in a problem sits down and talks about what they want and what they can give up to come up with a fair solution that everyone can agree on. Think of it like when you and your friends are trying to decide what to play together and one friend wants to play soccer but another friend doesn't like soccer, so you all talk about it and decide to play a game that everyone likes instead. In a settlement conference, the grown-ups talk about things like money, property, or other important things that they need to figure out. And if everyone can agree on a solution, they don't need to go to court!
