ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Seventh Party System

Okay kiddo, do you know what a party system is? It's when different groups of people with different ideas about how things should be done come together to form political groups or political parties. In the United States, there have been seven different time periods known as "party systems", each with their own main political parties and important issues. We are currently in the seventh party system.

During the seventh party system, there are two main political parties called the Democrats and Republicans. The Democrats tend to believe in more government involvement in things like healthcare and education, while the Republicans believe in smaller government and more individual freedoms. There are also many other smaller parties and independent candidates who have different beliefs.

One big issue in this party system is climate change, which is when the earth's temperature is getting warmer because people are burning fossil fuels like oil and gas. The Democrats generally believe that the government should do more to protect the environment and reduce pollution, while the Republicans are sometimes more skeptical about whether climate change is real or whether government intervention is needed to address it.

Another issue is immigration, which is when people move from one country to another. Democrats tend to support allowing more immigrants into the country and giving them legal status, while Republicans often prioritize border security and limiting the number of immigrants allowed.

So, during this party system, these are some of the main ideas and arguments the political parties are having, and they will influence how our country is run and what laws are made.
